If her death was just pretend, can't we will her back to life?
As bizarre details and confusing revelations continue to emerge in the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax, the story only gets stranger and more muddled. Is it straight from Catfish, from Punk'd, from Twin Peaks? Is it a joke, a con, a misunderstanding? Is it funny, tragic, manipulative? Does it degrade Te'o's intelligence, Notre Dame's integrity, the public's gullibility the press' laziness?
Maybe all of the above...but we don't feel like delving too deeply, so we're just gonna have fun and equate it to the comically multiplying rumor-mill legacy of Ferris Bueller.
Lennay Kekua was the fictional girlfriend of the Hawaiian Heisman, and like Ferris she was popular enough amongst those who'd never even met her to inspire a convoluted legend. NFL players insist they've met her, Te'o's parents were ready to welcome her to the family, national media celebrated her, millions followed the travails of her doomed romance, her life-threatening auto accident, her leukemia diagnosis and her brave, selfless death...even though none of it was true!
It's reminiscent of the tales of Bueller's illness ("My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious"). So just as the community rallied unnecessarily to "Save Ferris", we're putting our tongues in our cheeks and urging the salvation of another fictional character -- SAVE LENNAY!
